Adam Byer launches his Haruko (named after the meaning in Japanese) “Child
new range of Koi food. of Spring” was presented at the All Japan Koi Show in
the Dream Koi section by Katsuyuki Hoshino as a
2-year-old Nisai.
With the assistance of Simon Austin of Nippon
Nishikigoi and Ryuki Narita the deal was done and she
was purchased and proceeded to be grown on for the
season of 2015.
Upon Harvesting late 2015 she was now 62cm and
looked wonderful, then a further option was offered by
Katsuyuki for keeping her in the mud pond again for the

of KoiQuestion.
Harvested in the autumn of 2016 at 69cm on the advice
of all involved we knew that the Koi was progressing
very well, but thought best now to ship her to the UK
before taking any chances with a large Koi and shipping
from Japan if left for another year in the mud pond.
Ryuki handled the shipping arrangements in conjunction
with Simon, and she arrived in the UK in January 2017
to where she resides in my 10,000 gallon pond running
on a drum filter and Bakki showers, the pond is heated
for 9 months of the year between 16ºC and 24ºC.
Personally, I find Koi will grow better during the months
of September until January, so the water is kept at
24ºC with an average feeding time of once an hour,
thus allowing good growth rates without the inhibitions
and body restrictions of egg production.
As to the future of Haruko we will see, she’s still young
in terms of showing and still growing extremely well, so
V-N-H Zen Art display their
range of handcrafted maybe she might give me and my family the honour of
oriental ornaments. Grand Champion again.
