We walked down the side of George’s house to find a Ogons at Adam Byer’s Shooting Stars promotion at the
massive pond there in front of us. It was oval, six feet
deep, raised and capped with bricks, a total capacity of
15,000 gallons. The pond was fitted with three bottom
drains which feed into two 3 bay filters, the first bay of
each was fitted with a drop-in DracoDrum. There were
around 75 Koi in the pond, many varieties, some of
them quite big. I particularly remember a very large
Aka Matsuba.
Our host has a reputation of growing Koi very fast and
had a shed close by which housed several filtered
fibreglass tanks for quarantine, treatment and growing
on purposes. George had purchased two Mukashi

end of last year which had now reached 39 and 40cm.
The welcome smell of burgers and curry wafted across
George’s garden signaling the start of the BBQ. We
chatted about Koi and enjoyed this tasty feast, the raffle
was called, but it was all too soon to make the journey
home. We thanked our hosts for their generous
hospitality and look forward to their return visit to our
South East Koi Club in July.
I walked indoors, made myself a cup of tea, unwrapped
my tomato roll I had made early that morning, opened a
packet of crisps and watched the ladies football on TV
– what a great day out!
